After grabbing a dominant, 96-70 win over McNeese State on Monday, the stage is set for the Georgia State Panthers to face-off with Alabama on Tuesday night as a continuation of the NIT Season Tip-off event.
As noted in our preview of the McNeese St. game, this is the “regional final” of the tip-off tournament, and while it is being played in “enemy territory” in Tuscaloosa, a win here by the Panthers would propel them to the semifinals in New York over Thanksgiving.
Name value would normally place Alabama as a huge favorite in this game, but our friends in Las Vegas have only made the Crimson Tide a 7-point favorite in this game, and that is a huge nod of respect for the Panthers in what amounts to a true road game. GSU features a trio (at least) of high-major talent with Kentucky transfer Ryan Harrow, sophomore gunner R.J. Hunter (who is averaging 22 points per game), and senior Devonta White.
Alabama is a formidable opponent, led by senior guard Trevor Releford, but Tide head coach Anthony Grant doesn’t have the huge talent edge that you might expect, and I foresee a close-fought game with a big-time effort from Ron Hunter and the Panthers.
Stay tuned for more information, and an upcoming recap when the game is completed.
