It’s time.
Time for the annual journey to Durham, North Carolina and Cameron Indoor Stadium, as the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets take on the Duke Blue Devils. As usual, Duke isn’t exactly struggling for national recognition, as they feature one of the best players in the country in freshman Jabari Parker to go with another top-flight ranking under Coach K, and this is one tough road trip.
With that said, Duke is actually scuffling a bit this season (at least for them), as the program already has 3 losses, including an unfortunate conference-opening defeat against Notre Dame on Saturday. Still, they are a consensus top-20 team in the polls and for KenPom.com, and their offense is borderline incredible at times.
The aforementioned Parker is averaging 20.4 points (on 51.2% FG, 42.9% 3-PT), 7.7 rebounds, 1.2 blocks, and 1.0 steals per game this season to lead the nation’s most efficient offense (120 points per 100 possessions), and everything works through him. It would be a mistake to treat Duke as a one-man team, though, as Rodney Hood (17.9 points per game) and Quinn Cook (14.1 points, 6.1 assists) are having big seasons to go along with returning contributors like Andre Dawkins and Rasheed Sulaimon.
On the Tech side of things, the offense has really struggled, as the efficiency numbers have dipped outside of the top-150 nationally (102 points per 100), and without Robert Carter, Jr., the interior presence is very much lacking. It’ll be very interesting to see how Gregory treats Jabari Parker on the defensive end, but on the bright side, the Jackets have been very solid defensively all season (98.0 points per 100 allowed) and that lends some hope.
The experts in Las Vegas have installed the Blue Devils as a 17-point favorite in the game, and that is enough to make anyone turn their head. However, Cameron Indoor Stadium is one of the best home venues in the country (if not the best), and that alone may be worth 5+ points to Duke against a young Tech team playing without one of its best players. For the Jackets to have a chance, they need an excellent game out of one of their veterans (i.e. Georges-Hunt or Golden), and anything less will leave Brian Gregory in a tough spot.
Stay tuned for more information as it arrives, and we will bring you a recap after the final buzzer sounds.
