Georgia Tech bounced back from two consecutive losses with an important home win against Notre Dame on Saturday, and now, the Jackets will play host to another tough opponent. The 22nd-ranked Pitt Panthers are in Atlanta for a late-night game on Tuesday, and there is a national TV audience on the horizon.
Pitt enters the game with a sparkling 15-1 record, with their only blemish coming in a 1-point loss to a very solid Cincinnati team in mid-December. As usual, Pitt is led by their defense (allowing just over 92 points per 100 possessions), but this year, their offense is holding up their end of the bargain. Jamie Dixon’s club is 15th in the nation in offense, scoring more than 117 points per 100, and they are led by senior forward Lamar Patterson.
Patterson will give Brian Gregory and company all kinds of fits here, and is averaging nearly 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. It’s also an incredibly efficient performance from the 6-5 swingman, as he is shooting over 53% from the field and 41% from 3-point land this season. Marcus Georges-Hunt would presumably get the first crack at guarding him, but there will be a rotating door.
This is yet another game where the Jackets are underdogs, as Las Vegas has made Pitt a 7.5-point favorite, despite this game being played in Atlanta. Georgia Tech, like most teams, is much better at home, and this should be a packed house for a 9:00 pm tip-off. That energy level should help them compete with what amounts to a better team, and that gives hope to the Tech fan base.
Stay tuned for more information as it arrives, and we will bring you a recap after the final buzzer sounds.
