Earlier in the Week, Georgia Tech put up a worthy fight before succumbing to Pitt in a 7-point loss, and the Jackets are now set to finish a 3-game homestand with a match-up against Miami on Saturday.
These two teams are mirror images of each other in the standings, as each of them enter with a 1-3 conference record and 7 losses. Tech has been playing better basketball of late (despite the Pitt loss), and that has coincided with a step up in play from lead guard Trae Golden. Golden and the Tech offense will have their work cut out for them, though, as Miami is one of the better defenses in the country according to advanced metrics.
The Canes are led in scoring by Hinesville, GA native Rion Brown, and the 6-foot-6 senior is averaging more than 14 points and 6 rebounds per game. You can bet that Brian Gregory will deploy several options against Brown in this game, but Marcus Georges-Hunt seems to be the best choice on paper, and Miami’s offense has been quite shaky aside from their leading scorer.
Vegas has installed the Jackets as a 1.5-point favorite at home, and that is the epitome of a coin flip. Because of the venue, I would suggest that it is a virtual must-win for Tech to have any chance at securing an at-large bid, but at the same time, Brian Gregory and company could encounter a desperate Miami team with the talent to upstage them.
Stay tuned for more information as it arrives, and we will bring you a recap after the final buzzer sounds.
