Wednesday night represented rock bottom for the Georgia basketball program. The Dawgs failed to shoot even 30% from the field (not a misprint) in dropping a home game to Vanderbilt in excusable fashion, and now, they’ll look to bounce back as they make the short trip to Auburn to take on the Tigers.

Fortunately, Auburn represents a fairly easy target in which to grab some confidence, as “War Eagle” enters with a 9-9 record overall and a 1-6 mark in SEC play. Still, the Tigers are a much better team in their home building, and going on the road in conference play is never a breeze.

The offensive numbers for Georgia are alarming, to say the least, at this point in the season. In addition to being outside the top-150 nationally in points per 100 possessions (yikes), Mark Fox’s team is now 340th (!!!) in the country in assists per game at just 9.9 per contest, and outside the top-200 in field goal percentage, shooting less than 44% on the season. The match-up against Auburn is a good one, as they’ve struggled defensively, but there is a sickness moving around Athens from an offensive standpoint.

Our pals in Las Vegas have installed the Dawgs as a 4.5-point underdog in the game (and KenPom projects a 4-point loss), which is a pure indication of just how low the expectations are right now. Amazingly, a win will give the Dawgs a 5-3 record in SEC play, though, and that brings a dash of optimism to the table.

Stay tuned for updates as they arise.
