Normally Trae Golden is the driving force of this Georgia Tech basketball team. Without him putting up big numbers in Winston Salem, it was pretty unlikely that the Jackets would pick up a win against a good defensive Wake Forest team.

So when Golden had to come out of the game in the first quarter with a groin injury, things weren’t looking too good.

However, Marcus Georges-Hunt stepped up in Golden’s absence and put together his best game of the season to lead the Jackets in scoring with a career-high 23 points, to help Tech pick up a 79-70 win. Georges-Hunt eventually fouled out of the game, but the damage he was able to do in 34 minutes was more than enough to lead Tech to a fairly surprising victory. He shot 8-16 from the field, 2-4 from three and was a perfect 5-5 at the free throw line.

Daniel Miller also had an impressive game, adding 16 points and 14 rebounds. The activity the Jackets had on the glass was actually one of the bigger reasons for their success against Wake, as they out-rebounded the Demon Deacons 33-24.

Travis McKie had a terrific game for Wake Forest (26 points and a ridiculous 11-11 from the free throw line), but the rest of his team wasn’t too hot. Wake Forest missed 12 three-point shots (3-15) and Georgia Tech made them pay for all of those misses.

Kammeon Holsey put together another efficient game for the Jackets (3-4 shooting, 4-4 from the free throw line) and added 10 points, while Chris Bolden added 12 points and five boards with extra playing time after Golden came out of the game.
