After winning their first game of the season 6-5 to ODU, the Jackets dropped both of their remaining tournament games to fall to 1-2 on the young 2014 baseball season.

It started on Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Radford and got even worse Sunday afternoon with an error-plagued 5-3 loss to VCU.

Radford

During the game against Radford, Tech struggled mightily at the plate, picking up just two hits throughout the entire game. Radford starter Dylan Nelson threw six no-hit innings while striking out six and walking just two and Michael Costello threw the final three innings and only gave up two hits and a walk.

The only Jackets to tally hits on the day were SS Mott Hyde and 1B A.J. Murray–the three and four hitters, respectively.

VCU

Against VCU, it wasn’t a matter of offensive inefficiency, but defensive setbacks. The Rams (who won all three of their games in hte tournament) scored four unearned runs throughout the game in addition to an earned run to push by the Jackets 5-3. While the errors are likely the biggest reason for the loss, Georgia Tech still had chances to come back and pick up the win–they just couldn’t capitalize.

Coach Danny Hall told RamblinWreck.com about the struggles of getting guys all the way around the bases during the game:

"“I liked the way we kept getting guys on, but we could not get that hit to capitalize,” said head coach Danny Hall. “We had good at-bats today; we just couldn’t get enough of them together to get the runs in.”"

The Jackets were able to pick up seven hits and eight walks, but they left 11 runners on base. That’s not the recipe for offensive success. Then again, if the defense didn’t let up four unearned runs… you’re probably looking at a win.
