The Atlanta Braves got off to a less than ideal start with a 2-0 loss in Milwaukee on Opening Day, but the team is back at it on Tuesday evening as they look to even their record at 1-1. Pitching was certainly not the issue in the opener, as the team allowed only 2 runs despite Julio Teheran failing to pitch at his top level, and Alex Wood will aim to keep Milwaukee’s bats under wraps in game two.
Wood was the best pitcher for Atlanta this Spring, posting a minuscule 0.45 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 20 innings, and with him coming off a productive 2013 season (3.13 ERA in 77.2 innings), expectations are lofty for the 23-year-old lefty. Milwaukee’s lineup has some dangerous spots from the right side, including Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez, but if he can navigate that, Wood could keep the run prevention operating at a high level.
Offensively, the Braves took it on the chin in the opener, and they’ll face off with Kyle Lohse in game two. The 35-year-old right-hander is entering his 14th season in the big leagues, and despite a rough Spring (5.49 ERA), it is a reasonable expectation that he’ll be ready to go when called upon under the big-time lights. Lohse put together a 3.35 ERA last season in Milwaukee, and while he doesn’t have lights-out “stuff”, he’ll make the mostly right-handed Braves lineup work for everything they can get.
