Atlanta Dream fall to Indiana Fever in overtime heartbreaker
The Atlanta Dream went into overtime, again, against the Indiana Fever, but couldn’t pull away when it counted most, and the 82-77 loss brought the Atlanta record to an even 2-2, while the it was the first win on the young season for Indiana.
Back in the lineup for Atlanta was Angel McCoughtry, and she led all scorers with 19 points, while also tallying six rebounds and four assists. Four of the five Dream starters all scored in double figures, including McCoughtry, with 17 from Jasmine Thomas, Sancho Lyttle notching 15, and Erika de Souza recording 14. The lone starter not reaching the 10 point mark was rookie Shoni Schimmel, who had her first true “welcome to pro ball,” game, only four points and bringing down two rebounds, but she did dish out eight assists.
For the second straight night, Atlanta shot abysmally from beyond the arc, shooting just 20%, which is very well what did the Dream in. They out shot Indiana from both the floor (46% compared to 38%) as well as the free throw line (70% to 67%), but the Fever were able to go 33% from downtown.
The Fever also had four players reach double figures, and they were lead by Briann January who dropped 16 while also dishing out seven dimes.
While a two game losing streak certainly isn’t ideal, an overtime loss isn’t anything to write off, and after all, it’s still early. The Dream will have another long break before welcoming the Seattle Storm into Philips Arena on Friday night.
