Report: Maryland transfer Charles Mitchell considering Georgia and Georgia Tech
By Brad Rowland
In a rare story that could reach both the Georgia Bulldogs and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, there is a high-profile college basketball transfer that could be considering both programs as landing spots for next season. Maryland transfer Charles Mitchell, a productive power forward, has reportedly listed both the Dawgs and Jackets in his top five options, and there is an interesting twist with his pursuit.
Jeff Ermann of InsideMDSports.com brings the latest:
"Outgoing Maryland transfer Charles Mitchell is considering five schools — Georgia, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Alabama and Charleston — according to a source close to the situation. Per the source, Mitchell is most seriously considering the Georgia schools and Auburn.Maryland confirmed last week that Mitchell was leaving the program in order to be closer to his ailing grandmother in the Atlanta area. The 6-foot-7, 250-pound power forward, who averaged 6.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in 18.8 minutes per game last season, has not yet scheduled any visits."
Because Mitchell’s transfer has been pushed by a family circumstance, it is reasonable to expect that he’ll be applying for a waiver that would allow him immediate eligibility at either Georgia or Georgia Tech. Both programs could desperately use a bruising power forward, but with Georgia Tech recently losing their best player in Robert Carter Jr., Mitchell’s potential arrival could be a Godsend for Brian Gregory and the Jackets.
It is important to note that even if Mitchell isn’t available right away, he would have two years of eligibility, and with a player who has already played effectively at the major college level, both programs would be greatly improved if he chose to come south. Stay tuned.
