Atlanta Braves at Colorado Rockies preview: Coors Field adventures

Update: The Braves will utilize the “A-team” lineup for the series opener in Colorado.

After an unfortunate conclusion to the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks that featured back-to-back losses, the Atlanta Braves remain in the Western part of the United States as they take on the Colorado Rockies for a four-game set. For the uninitiated, a trip to Denver to take on the Rockies means a visit to Coors Field, and as the most hitter-friendly stadium in all of baseball, the venue presents some interesting challenges to any visiting club.

The Rockies will send a first-time starter to the mound in Monday’s opener, as 26-year-old right-hander Christian Bergman is set to make his Major League debut. To be honest, Bergman is considered to be a fringe prospect, and this could be his one and only start with the big league club, but in the past, Atlanta has struggled against arms that they have not seen, and that is something to monitor. The offense has been increasingly effective in recent days, and if the stars align, the Braves could put up crooked numbers here.

Fredi Gonzalez and company will send right-hander Gavin Floyd to the mound, and the veteran is coming off of arguably his worst start of the season. Floyd allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 10 hits in just 5 innings against the Mariners last week, and the venue will certainly present issues for the very “hittable” Floyd. It will be interesting to see how he navigates what has been an impressive offense from Colorado this season.
