Shae Simmons hits DL with right shoulder strain, Juan Jamie recalled
Moments ago, the Atlanta Braves annouced through Twitter that 23-year-old righthanded reliever Shae Simmons will be headed to the 15-day disabled list:
It’s never good to see a pitcher go down with an arm injury, and you could even argue that it’s worse to see a shoulder injury than an elbow injury at this point. Regardless, losing Simmons is going to be a solid blow to the bullpen.
Simmons has thrown just 21.2 innings for the Braves this year, but they have been extremely effective. He’s posted a 2.91 ERA, 3.14 FIP and 3.24 xFIP while striking out 9.55 batters per nine innings and walking 4.57 per nine. He’s obviously walked a decent amount, but still has a 1.20 WHIP and was holding batters to just a .192 average.
Juan Jaime had a short stint with the Braves in June and did as well as anyone could have expected in limited work. He’s thrown 35.2 innings in Triple-A Gwinnett this year and has struck out and walked a lot of batters. His 13.88 K/9 is inspiring, but there’s no way that overcomes an 8.33 BB/9 mark.
In the meantime, let’s hope that the injury to Simmons isn’t anything too serious and that he’ll be back with the club sooner rather than later. With Jaime, the Braves at least have another pitcher who has no problems lighting up the radar gun.
