Atlanta Falcons move Jake Matthews to left tackle

In the wake of yet another injury to (former) starting left tackle Sam Baker, the Atlanta Falcons have made the logical decision and moved rookie tackle Jake Matthews to a spot on the left side of the line.

D. Orlando Ledbetter, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution spread the word on Twitter:

Without going over how big this injury is to the team again, the depth on the line is worrisome at this point. It’s fortunate that the best player the Falcons picked up in the draft is going to be the guy with the most responsibility this year. Still, Matthews is a rookie and there’s no telling how quickly he can adjust to the NFL game.

All reports seem to indicate that he can make an impact in the running game right away, but there are still some questions about how effective he’ll be in pass protection. As Dave Choate wrote about yesterday on The Falcoholic, Matthews isn’t lacking for any confidence in the move to left tackle.

Now that Matthews is going to be at left tackle, Ledbetter reports that Lamar Holmes will be the starter at right tackle.
