Atlanta Falcons sign Pat McQuistan; place Sam Baker on IR

It has been a busy weekend for the Atlanta Falcons, as left tackle Sam Baker unfortunately succumbed to a season-ending injury on Saturday evening. That move set off a chain of events that resulted in first round pick Jake Matthews being moved from right tackle to left tackle, and on Monday afternoon, the organization attempted to fortify its depth at the tackle position by signing eight-year veteran Pat McQuistan.

The 31-year-old McQuistan was last seen as a member of the Tennessee Titans in 2013, but prior to that, he started a total of eleven games between the Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals, while also spending time with the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints. At this point, we should assume that this is a pure depth move, especially with McQuistan’s track record, but it is also too early to rule out any long-term contribution he could make.

The Atlanta Falcons will resume their preseason schedule against the Titans on Saturday evening, and with at least one roster spot up for grabs between Harland Gunn, Terren Jones and, presumably, Pat McQuistan on the offensive line, there is plenty to monitor.
