Kirk Herbstreit ranks Georgia as number one team in nation

On the strength of what was a dominant performance in a win over the Clemson Tigers on Saturday evening, the Georgia Bulldogs have gained a great deal of respect and intrigue across the country. However, the greatest “tip of the cap” came from Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN’s College GameDay, as he ranks Mark Richt’s team number one in the country following the season’s opening weekend.

Frankly, it seems a bit insane to rank Georgia ahead of defending national champion Florida State, but on the strength of only what we saw on Saturday, it certainly is defensible. The offense, led by co-SEC Player of the Week Todd Gurley, was dominant at times in carving up what is a talented defensive group from Clemson, and while the passing game wasn’t leaned on heavily, Hutson Mason was quite solid in his maiden voyage as the full-time starter.

Defensively, the UGA defense has an embarrassment of riches in the front seven, but more importantly, the secondary looked to be improving on each and every snap on Saturday. It will be crucial for Jeremy Pruitt and his staff to keep things going, however, as the Dawgs travel to Columbia to take on a wounded and desperate South Carolina team after a bye week.

Stay tuned for the latest, but Kirk Herbstreit really likes this group.
