Todd Gurley, Amarlo Herrera named SEC Players of the Week
By Brad Rowland
Week one was very good to the Georgia Bulldogs. Mark Richt’s club exploded during a second-half barrage against the Clemson Tigers, and as a result, ran away with a 24-point victory against what was a top-20 team in America. In addition to the team success, however, the Bulldogs saw two players receive individual recognition, as running back Todd Gurley and linebacker Amarlo Herrera were each named SEC players of the week.
As noted above, Gurley shared offensive honors with Texas A&M quarterback Kenny Hill, but the Heisman contender was incredible on Saturday. The bruising runner needed only 15 carries to generate 198 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground, and his 13.2 yards per carry average was indicative of just how dominant Todd Gurley was throughout the day.
Defensively, Amarlo Herrera was equally as impressive, taking home sole honors on that side of the ball after a 12-tackle, 2-sack performance. It was the UGA defense that utterly shut Clemson down in the second half (the Tigers went scoreless), and Herrera headlined what was a great performance from the much-heralded linebacking corps.
Congratulations to both players on their honors!
