Running game pushes Georgia Tech over Tulane

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets picked up their second win of the season against the Tulane Green Wave today after a terrific team-wide rushing effort. After piling up 344 yards on the ground (more than the 327 total yards Tulane managed) the Jackets were left standing with a 38-21 victory.

Zach Laskey and Justin Thomas provided the bulk of the work throughout the game and had the most carries of the game with 12 and 10 respectively. Laskey averaged 7.2 yards per carry and totaled 86 yards while Thomas picked up 70 and averaged seven per rush.

However, the scoring came from two entirely different players–Tony Zenon and Tim Byerly. Both players scored two touchdowns for the Jackets totaled a combined 83 yards on the ground.

It was a rough night for Tech in the passing game though, as Thomas threw the ball just eight times for 15 yards. He connected on just three of his passes while one of them went for an interception. Thomas showed in game one that he could be effective in the passing game, but that wasn’t the case today against Tulane.

Still, when the running attack is going that well, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue for the Jackets.

What might be concerning is the defense, who allowed 231 passing yards and 6.6 yards per pass. But, then again, the team did intercept the ball three times, which led to more scores for the offense.

All in all, another solid game for the Jackets in my mind, but the real tests have yet to come.

Stay tuned.
