Julio Teheran breaks Atlanta Braves losing skid against Pirates

If you are reading this recap, you’re one of the true-blue Atlanta Braves fans that never stops watching until the season is over. Good on you.

On Wednesday night, your patience was rewarded with an offensive outburst by the Braves unlike anything we’ve seen since September 10th. The Braves decided to go out and score some runs for Julio Teheran, and even Julio himself added to the totals.

In the second inning, the Braves opened the scoring with a two-run single by Emilio Bonifacio to knock in Chris Johnson and B.J. Upton. The second run was courtesy of BJ stealing a base to get to second while Chris was sitting at third. So, he’s not completely useless if he can actually touch first base. Too bad it doesn’t happen that often.

In the third inning, the Braves struck again when they loaded the bases with two outs, and Julio Teheran managed a single to knock in Chris Johnson and Christian Bethancourt. In the fourth inning, Freddie Freeman decided to hit a good old fashioned two-run homer. We’ve seen so few of those this September, I’d almost forgotten what a homer looked like. Just like that, it was 6-0 Braves.

The Pirates might have been slightly under the weather after their celebration on Tuesday night, possibly with the Budweiser flu. In any case, they looked mostly lost at the plate while Julio worked his magic. Well, everyone except Andrew McCutchen looked lost. McCutchen blasted a two-run homer in the fifth that was a complete no-doubter. That would make it 6-2 Braves.

That’s how the game would end with the Braves winning. One thing that bugged me about the game was that the Braves had to use seven pitchers. Check that, Fredi Gonzalez decided to use seven pitchers. There’s no reason for that late in the season, like Fredi’s suddenly managing in the World Series. Braves had six runs on eleven hits and six walks. The team went 3-14 with runners in scoring position, and stranded eleven runners, but a win’s a win. The MVP goes to Julio Teheran, who went five innings allowing two runs, but amazingly went 2/2 at the plate with two RBIs.

After five straight losses, the Atlanta Braves emerge victorious, and they scored enough runs to get their fans some half off pizza. For a team that’s eliminated, you can’t really ask for much more. Tune in on Thursday to see the Braves final game at Turner Field in 2014.
