Atlanta Falcons place Peter Konz on injured reserve

It has been three weeks since the Atlanta Falcons lost both starting center Joe Hawley and starting right tackle Lamar Holmes to season-ending injuries. In that period of time, the team has gone win-less while struggling mightily to protect quarterback Matt Ryan. Unfortunately, that period of unrest continued on Monday afternoon, when the team placed replacement starter Peter Konz on injured reserve with a knee injury.

At the time of this post, the official diagnosis for Konz’s knee has not been released, but placement on injured reserve is usually an indication of a severe sprain or a tear. The former second-round pick from Wisconsin has been a gigantic disappointment during his time with the Falcons organization, but at the same time, there is little depth behind Konz, and we could be in store for a look at Harland Gunn or James Stone at the center spot when the team travels to London to face the Detroit Lions in Week 8.

The loss of Konz isn’t a giant one on the surface, simply because of his faulty production throughout his tenure, but Matt Ryan continues to lose protectors, and the injuries are piling up in a big way.
