Atlanta Hawks vs. San Antonio Spurs preview: Preseason Finale
On Wednesday evening, the Atlanta Hawks travel to San Antonio to take on the Spurs in the final game of their preseason schedule.
It has been an interesting run for the team, and they’ll head into this game with a chance at a winning record for the preseason. At the moment, the Hawks are 3-3 after last night’s overtime win against the Hornets. Of course, win-loss records at this point really mean nothing and the most important things are 1) keeping everyone healthy, and 2) getting the team closer to mid-season form.
It’ll be interesting to see how many minutes Mike Budenholzer gives Al Horford tonight, after limiting him to 24 minutes against the Hornets. During that time, Horford showed he was still a dominant big man, scoring 10 points and hauling in six rebounds with the time. Other players to watch will be Dennis Schröder and Mike Scott — both of whom had terrific nights against Charlotte.
Schroder was the biggest takeaway from the Charlotte game according to our very own Brad Rowland:
"Schröder played under control for the duration of the night, committing only 2 turnovers while flashing the speed and explosiveness that make him a high-end prospect. In the post-game, Dennis was quick to say that his confidence is “through the roof” at the moment, citing Budenholzer’s willingness to entrust him with the reins to the team, and the head coach praised his point guard by saying that he was “very pleased with the progress (Dennis) is making.”"
Scott led all Atlanta players in scoring from the bench Monday night, dropping 16 points thanks mostly to going 4-6 from 3-point land.
Speaking of 3-point shooting, the starters will need to do better in that area against the Spurs. Against Charlotte, none of the starters made a 3-point shot. That’s extremely rare to see from this Hawks team and I’d be surprised to see more of that poor shooting moving forward.
