By Keith Holt
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were able to hold off the Mastodons of IPFW with a 78-69 victory at McCamish Pavilion to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Brian Gregory’s team used their size advantage over their opponents to a 43-26 rebounding advantage, and held the visiting Mastodons to 43% from the field on the night. The Jackets were paced by Demarco Cox, who tied a career high with 15 points while also pulling down 7 rebounds. Quinton Stephens had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to support Cox for Tech.
The Mastodons did not go away quietly, as they kept trying to close the gap, even pulling the game within a point on three different occasions during the second half. IPFW was led by Steve Forbes with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Mo Evans also chipped in 16 points.
Georgia Tech did struggle at the free throw line, only hitting 11 for 25, and the Jackets gave up 12 turnovers to their Summit League opponents. The game broke open on a 12-1 run by the Jackets, which gave them a 70-58 lead with 3:36 left, and they were able to ride that suddenly comfortable margin to victory.
The next game for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will be against Marquette at the HP Field House, as a part of the Orlando Classic on November 27. Stay tuned to ATL All Day for the latest.
