Georgia Tech vs. Northwestern Preview: ACC-Big Ten Challenge
By Brad Rowland
Each year, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets participate, as a part of their conference affiliation, in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. This season’s edition is scheduled for this week, and Brian Gregory’s club will be in Evanston, Illinois to take on the Northwestern Wildcats in primetime on Wednesday.
The Jackets sit at 5-1 on the year, with the lone blemish coming in a nail-biter to Marquette, and Tech is on the heels of a solid victory over Rhode Island on Sunday in Orlando. Now, the team will be embarking on its first “true” road game of the season, but while Northwestern is 5-1 in their own right, this isn’t the stiff challenge that you may assume.
Northwestern sits outside the top-100 in the latest rankings from Ken Pomeroy, and they have struggled mightily offensively, scoring just 98 points per 100 possessions for the season. Still, in a true road game, expectations should be relatively modest here for the Yellow Jackets, and KenPom actually predicts a narrow win for Northwestern.
This is a chance for Georgia Tech to prove some doubters wrong in a spot against a team who represents the best basketball conference in the land, and Brian Gregory is surely salivating at a teaching opportunity. Either way, this is should be a highly entertaining, nationally televised contest, and that brings extra eyeballs to the table.
