Georgia Tech to meet Mississippi State in Orange Bowl
By Brad Rowland
Despite a close-fought loss on Saturday night in Charlotte, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have had a stellar season in 2014. That positive performance was rewarded on Sunday afternoon, as it was announced that Paul Johnson and his team will be traveling to Miami for New Year’s eve for a match-up against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the 2014 Capital One Orange Bowl.
The Jackets, who hold a 10-3 overall record, will square off with another 10-win team in Mississippi State, and the Bulldogs are led by an All-American level quarterback in Dak Prescott. This will undeniably be an interesting match-up, especially given Mississippi State’s lofty position in the rankings (i.e. number one) earlier in the year, and this is yet another opportunity for the triple option offense to go toe-to-toe with “SEC speed”.
Mississippi State allowed fewer than 20 points per game for the season, but with the way that Georgia Tech has been cooking offensively, that shouldn’t scare anyone in Atlanta. Still, this has all the makings of a big-time battle, and it should be intriguing to see what type of fan turnout that the Jackets can muster for a holiday trip to the beautiful city of Miami.
The game will take place on December 31 at 8:00 pm, and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Mississippi State earned the seventh position in the final rankings released by the College Football Playoff Committee, while Georgia Tech fell twelfth in the rankings following the ACC Championship loss.
Stay tuned throughout the month of December for wall-to-wall coverage of the Orange Bowl, and this should be fun.
