Georgia Bulldogs vs. Vanderbilt Commodores Preview: Late Night in Nashville
By Brad Rowland
After a six-game winning streak that saw many national pundits beginning to give respect to the Georgia Bulldogs on the hardwood, Mark Fox’s team has now lost back-to-back games. In fairness, it was a very tough gauntlet against Arkansas at home and LSU on the road, but the Dawgs are rewarded with another road game on Wednesday, as face off with the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville.
Vanderbilt enters with an 11-4 record against just 9-5 for Georgia, but in the same breath, most “power ratings” list the Bulldogs as the better team here. Unfortunately, the road venue swings things toward the ‘Dores a bit, as both Las Vegas and KenPom indicate Vandy as a small favorite in this one.
Defense will be the key for Georgia here, as Vanderbilt has posted a very strong offensive showing this season, scoring 109.8 points per 100 possessions. 6-foot-10 sophomore big man Damian Jones has been the standard bearer for Vanderbilt this season, averaging 16.1 points and 7.1 rebounds, and he should be the focal point of the defensive attack.
With the perception of the SEC as a whole in serious jeopardy, the Georgia Bulldogs must take care of business in some true road games, and this is a prime opportunity to do just that. Vanderbilt isn’t a bad basketball team, but they are far from unbeatable, and the Dawgs can emerge with a win if they can put together a quality effort.
