Report: Fredi Gonzalez could receive contract extension
By Brad Rowland
The Atlanta Braves are seen as a full-fledged contender for the 2015 season, and expectations for the on-field product are as low as at any point in recent memory. However, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports brings word that Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez appears safe in his position, and with that, he could even see a contract extension in the coming days.
Frankly, this makes no sense. Gonzalez has been successful in terms of the team’s record over his stay (358-290), but from a tactical standpoint, there are few worse in-game decision-makers in the sport. In his defense, Fredi Gonzalez has garnered support from his players, which likely endures him to both Bobby Cox (a manager in the same style) and John Schuerholz, but in 2015, being a player’s manager simply isn’t enough.
It will be interesting to see if perception, especially in the front office, shifts during what is expected to be a down season. Still, Fredi Gonzalez has apparently earned higher standing within the organization than originally thought, and that could prove vital in keeping his job for the long-term.
