Georgia Bulldogs stumble in 67-50 loss to South Carolina

The Georgia Bulldogs saw their SEC winning streak stopped at five games with a 67-50 loss today to the Gamecocks of South Carolina. Georgia clearly appeared to be missing leading scorer and rebounder Marcus Thornton, who was out due to a concussion issue. The Bulldogs are now 5-3 in conference play and 14-6 overall for the season.
The first half started off sluggish for the Bulldogs. The teams was clearly missing leading scorer Marcus Thornton as they endured a 7 minute scoring drought in the first half. Both teams struggled to find the basket early in the period as South Carolina was 6 for 17 shooting in the first ten minutes of the game and the Bulldogs were 4 for 17. The Gamecocks were able to shake off their slow start late in the first half with a 12 -2 run with 2 minutes left in the half and led by as many as 15 before the intermission.

The lone bright spot for Georgia in the first half was JJ Frazier, who led the team with 9 points and was 6 for 7 from the charity stripe. None of the other Bulldogs were to get much going as the team finished the session 7 for 25 shooting and also had 7 turnovers compared to Carolina’s 3.
The second only got worse for the Bulldogs. The Gamecocks capitalized on smothering defense were able to score 25 points off Georgia turnovers. Mark Fox’s team continued to have shooting woes as they were 5 for 25 from the floor in the 2nd half and shot a total of 22% for the game. Georgia had to rely on free throw shooting to account for half of their 50 points for the game.
The Dawgs were led by guard JJ Frazier’s 16 points and they also got a quality effort from guard Charles Mann.
South Carolina had four players in double figures in a well balanced effort, and the Gamecocks were led by forward Laimonas Chatkevicius’s 12 points.
Next up for the Georgia Bulldogs is a road game against the #1 ranked team in the country, the Kentucky Wildcats, on February 3 in Lexington.
