Dante Fowler linked to Atlanta Falcons in notable mock draft
By Brad Rowland
It is NFL mock draft season, and the Atlanta Falcons continue to be linked to every pass-rusher under the sun. Just days after an ESPN mock projected Oregon defensive end Arik Armstead to the Falcons with the eighth overall pick, the team from Flowery Branch has been connected to another potentially impactful defensive option in former Florida Gators defensive end/outside linebacker Dante Fowler.
Dan Kadar of SBNation.com had this to say about a potential fit between Fowler and the Falcons:
"By drafting Fowler, the Falcons would have a versatile, movable player up front on defense who gives great effort and will get into the backfield. Under Dan Quinn, the Falcons will need to figure out how to get pressure from the front four. They can do that with Fowler, a player who can work inside and outside, and even move to linebacker. If Fowler is gone, there are players who could slot in as traditional pass rushers."
At the very least, it is well-established that the Atlanta Falcons need help on the defensive side of the ball, and it is safe to assume that virtually every mock draft will follow suit in that regard. Fowler is one of the bigger names as an edge rusher in this draft, and at 6-foot-2 and 270 pounds, he is a player who could make an across-the-board contribution.
Because of his versatility, Fowler would be an ideal choice for the new system under head coach Dan Quinn. While Dante Fowler had “only” 5.5 sacks as a junior in Gainesville, production should not be a concern for a player that appears to have a quality motor and a strong physical profile.
The Atlanta Falcons need help in several areas (adding linebacker and safety to the mix), but pass-rusher continues to be the focus in most circles, and Dante Fowler would look great in the red and black.
