Atlanta Hawks vs. Cavs: My Spidey Senses Are Tingling!
The Atlanta Hawks host the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight, and despite the senses of some writers, my own spidey senses are tingling!
The last week or so, I’ve heard and read something along the lines of the following too often (I paraphrase):
The Atlanta Hawks have the best record in the NBA, and have played consistently well all year, but there is just this sense that the Cleveland Cavaliers will get in their way come playoff time.
My reaction to that is to shake my head, and just laugh! Why? Because I’m not feeling this so-called sense at all! Yes, I’m an Atlanta fan, but I’m objective to a fault, and my own spidey senses are telling me that Atlanta shouldn’t be underestimated!
I’ll not disagree that the Cavaliers have the talent to upset the Hawks. After all, the Cavs upset the Hawks to the tune of 127-94 back in mid November, but fans like me count that as a glitch on the radar. As you know, the Hawks got revenge in December with a beat down of their own, 127-98.
The Cavs, however, have made important personnel changes, and have begun to gel more as a team since then, and certainly of late. In these two teams most recent battle in late December, the Hawks won again.
With a 109-101 conclusion, that score is likely much more indicative of the kind of close battle we’re likely to see between these two teams. So far though, the Hawks have clearly shown who is the better team.
Isn’t this so-called sense then, no more than the Cavs having a bona fide superstar in LeBron James on their team, while the Hawks are just a blue-collar, hard-nosed team that plays fundamentally good basketball, night-in and night-out?
I guess America just loves their shiny baubles!
The Atlanta Hawks got off to a shaky start early this season, then found that formula that made them tick, and went on a rampage that few (even die-hard Hawks fans) expected.
With an NBA best-record of 48-12, they’ve won 41 of their last 48 games in total, and showed early this year the kind of stuff this team is made of with a 19 game winning streak.

The bottom line for the Atlanta Hawks is that however this game against the Cavs goes tonight, the Hawks are in a place to guarantee home court advantage for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference by winning just 12 games before the season ends. They seem to be able to do that in their sleep.
The game tonight is almost (for many) a sort of mini-preview of what we might see in the playoffs.
This will be these two teams final meeting of the regular season, and the upside for the Hawks is getting to test their mettle against a tough Cleveland team, doing it while well-rested after a couple of days off, and getting to test it at home in Atlanta!
The Cavs on their other hand were off last night, but having played four games in a row, they will be considerably less rested. Those things will be definite factors in tonight’s match-up. Be sure to tune in and root our beloved Hawks to victory.
