The 2014-15 Atlanta Hawks season just set another record: most franchise wins.
They beat the old record of 57 wins set in 1986-87 and 1993-94 with Tuesday night’s defeat of the Phoenix Suns. After Wednesday night’s victory over Brooklyn they are 59-19, a full 40 games over .500.
It’s been a remarkable season for the Hawks, and pretty unexpected. While the team squeaked into the playoffs last year as an eight seed, they secured the #1 seed in the East a couple of weeks ago. With the remarkable [franchise record] 19 game winning streak in January, this team is really entering uncharted waters.
With just four games to go they only need one more win to hit 60. Two more wins would secure a record of 40 wins over the .500 mark. But those are pretty irrelevant compared to the playoffs.
Now that the all time regular season mark has been set, Coach Budenholzer can start preparing for what we hope is a long run into May and June.
The Hawks have never made it out of the second round of the playoffs…so the goal starts there. With the way the team has excelled all year, however, that seems like the minimum. LeBron James and the Cavaliers or Derrick Rose and the Bulls won’t be seen until at least the Eastern Conference Finals, so it should be a task they’re able to accomplish – but we’ve seen great Hawks teams fall before.
For now, we’ve got at least another week to bask in the glow of a tremendous regular season. Hopefully the Hawks will be able to pull out 60+ wins and soar into the playoffs on a hot streak.
