No Eastern Conference team has a playoff streak longer than the Atlanta Hawks eight consecutive trips. Only the San Antonio Spurs’ 17 year run is greater in the NBA.

The franchise consistency is impressive, but the lack of success isn’t that great. Nevertheless, it’s been nice to have winning basketball in Atlanta after hitting rock bottom from 2000-07 without any postseasons.

The Hawks have been through three head coaches and completely turned over their roster (except Al Horford). Here’s a look back at the last seven trips to the NBA Playoffs:

2008 vs. Celtics

The Hawks steadily improved each season under Mike Woodson until they squeaked into the playoffs in 2008 with a 37-45 record. The Boston Celtics had the big three: Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. It was expected to be a sweep.

At the trade deadline that year, Atlanta acquired Mike Bibby to run the point. His veteran presence along with shooting guard Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith and Al Horford, the Hawks were able to finally bring playoff basketball back to Atlanta.

Just that was enough to pack Philips Arena and shock the Celtics at the atmosphere that awaited them. After losing the first two games in Boston, the Hawks were able to win Game 3 and Game 4 at home. All of the sudden it was a series after many thought it would end up a route.

The Hawks fans were the difference. After losing Game 5 they propelled the team to victory again in Game 6 to force do or die in Boston. Things didn’t work out as the Celtics demolished the Hawks in Game 7, but it was quite a run that gave the team plenty of confidence for the next season. The Celtics would go on to win the NBA Title.
