Atlanta Braves End Skid With 5-2 Win Over Phillies

After four straight games of meager offensive production, the Atlanta Braves’ bats came alive in the top of the seventh inning.  SS Andrelton Simmons led off the frame with a solo shot to left-centerfield off of former Georgia State Panther SP David Buchanan.  Jonny Gomes and Kelly Johnson were able to draw consecutive walks with two outs in the inning.  Chris Johnson tied the game up with a pinch-hit single up the middle to score Gomes.  Eric Young, Jr. then doubled to left field to plate Kelly Johnson.

  • Shelby Miller earns the win to move to 3-0 on the year.  His only mistake was a two-run blast to center field off Braves killer Ryan Howard’s bat in the bottom of the fourth inning. Miller can look back on tonight’s start with approval, going six innings and allowing two runs on just three hits.

Nick Markakis and AJ Pierzynski continue to hit.  Both moved up in the batting order tonight, leading off and batting cleanup respectively.  Simmons just might work out in the two-hole this year.  If he and Markakis can deliver at the top the order for the Atlanta Braves, the team can improve in their ability to manufacturing runs.

Gomes had two hits and made a fantastic play off the left-centerfield wall to throw out C Carlos Ruiz trying stretch a single into a double in bottom of the seventh inning.  It made me think that Gomes knows how to field a ball cleanly off a wall due to his time in Boston.  If you can handle deflections off the Green Monster, you’re in pretty good shape defensively.

Jason Grilli had a perfect ninth inning and recorded his seventh save in as many chances for the Braves this season.  I was glad to see him pitch effectively as it has been a while since Grilli last had a save opportunity.

It was nice to see the Braves offense function in the midst of a Freddie Freeman slump.  Trevor Cahill takes the hill tomorrow against Phillies’ righthander Jerome Williams.  The series finale begins at 1:35 ET as the Braves look to end their long road trip on a positive note.
