Three Good Spots for UGA’s Chris Conley
By John Buhler
Senior wide receiver Chris Conley just finished a great career at the University of Georgia. The well-spoken gentleman from Dallas, Georgia made many great catches for the Dawgs during his four years in Athens. Known primarily as a possession receiver in college, Conley outperformed just about every WR at February’s Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Conley ran the fastest 40 yd dash (4.35 seconds), lifted the most (18 bench reps), and jumped the best (45.o inch vertical, 139.0 broad jump) of any wideout at Lucas Oil Stadium.
While many scouts believe his greatest weakness lies in his difficulties breaking press coverage, Conley projects as a potential starter worthy of a mid-round pick.
Here are three teams I believe could use Conley’s quickness, reliable hands, and his high moral fiber.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Jaguars HC Gus Bradley and GM Dave Caldwell need to start seeing some results on the field. Both men will enter their third year in Jacksonville with just a combined eight wins over two seasons. It’s been a very rough last few seasons for the Jaguars as they try to rebuild their entire roster from scratch in the Shad Khan era.
QB Blake Bortles will enter his sophomore season in the NFL after a decent job handling the baptism by fire in year one. Bortles already looks better in his first season under center than Blaine Gabbert ever did. In addition to solidifying a porous offensive line, Caldwell would be wise to surround Bortles with sure-handed playmakers in the receiving corps.
The free agent signing of TE Julius Thomas will only help Bortles complete more passes in the short game. Jags WRs Marqise Lee and Allen Hurns showed promise last year in stretching the field for Jacksonville. I see Conley competing for third receiver with the Jaguars’ Allen Robinson and Ace Sanders. Conley’s professionalism could go along way in a Jacksonville Jaguars locker room that hasn’t made the playoffs in close to a decade.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are in the midst of a tailspin. Former HC Jim Harbaugh’s overly demanding coaching style grew tiresome in his fourth season in the Bay Area. Now he coaches his alma mater Michigan Wolverines. The retirements of LBs Patrick Willis and Chris Borland and coaching staff mass exodus leaves the Niners looking up at their three divisional foes.

New HC Jim Tomsula needs guys that can catch Colin Kaepernick fireballs consistently and players that can stay positive even in dark times. GM Trent Baalke should consider Chris Conley with a mid-round pick if he is leaning towards drafting a receiver.
Seattle Seahawks
If there is one weakness to the two-time reigning NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks’ roster, it’s that their receiving corps is one of the least productive in the NFL. While the trade to acquire TE Jimmy Graham from the New Orleans Saints will drastically alter QB Russell Wilson’s plan of attack between the hash marks, he could still use some help in completing third and longs.
GM John Schneider is the best in the business at finding talent in the second and third days of the draft. All-Pro CB Richard Sherman was a fifth round pick out of Stanford. What Chris Conley can bring to the table fits right in with the Seattle Seahawks culture.
My guess is that Chris Conley will play in the Pacific Northwest for Pete Carroll this fall. Dawg Nation, which team do you believe will draft UGA’s Chris Conley?
