Mike Foltynewicz Makes Braves Debut Tonight Vs. Reds

facebooktwitterreddit

Atlanta Braves rookie fireballer Mike Foltynewicz will make his debut tonight with the ball club when he gets the start against the Cincinnati Reds.  The Braves acquired Folty in the Evan Gattis trade with the Houston Astros this offseason.  While the Braves sacrificed herculean power from the right side of the plate in C Evan Gattis, they received high-octane gas rocketing off the mound in return.

  • The trade the Braves made with Houston this winter was by far the best one President of Baseball Operations John Hart orchestrated.  Hart sold high on Gattis and now has the Braves number three prospect in Folty.  Yes, it was tough to see El Oso Blanco leave after two great seasons in Atlanta, but I think we all knew that Evan had to play in the American League. He still holds real defensive liability entering year three of his big league career.

Folty brings the heat to a rotation historically known for placement and movement.  Braves legend John Smoltz is the only long-term starter for Atlanta I can remember consistently hit 95+ MPH on the radar gun.  Mike Foltynewicz’s fastball routinely clocks at over 100+ MPH!  Even if he never really establishes impeccable control with his fastball, Folty can still bring value to a young Braves bullpen.  Atlanta has had no issue with getting guys in their relief corps that can hit 95+ MPH regularly.

As rough as it has been this last week and half for Braves Country, getting to watch Mike Foltynewicz pitch for the Big League ball club should excite even the most disillusioned of Braves fans.  While the team is treading water during a rough patch of their season, keep in mind that youngsters like Folty will shine in Braves uniform in the not so distant future.  If Mike Foltynewicz harnesses the control of his heater by 2017 when the Braves move up the road to SunTrust Park, watch out National League East!

First pitch tonight comes at 7:35 PM ET as Foltynewicz squares off with Cincinnati Reds starter Anthony DeSclafini.
