Reds Homer Thrice, Braves Fall 8-4
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves fall 8-4 in the third game of their series with the Cincinnati Reds. Triples and home runs just kept coming off the Reds’ bats. Jay Bruce had two triples and 3 RBI’s for Cincinnati in a game that featured three Reds homers, none of which by the slugger rightfielder. Todd Frazier and Marlon Byrd each had solo shots in the middle innings. But it was Zack Cosart’s two-run blast in the top of the ninth inning that pretty much sealed the Braves’ fate tonight.

Braves starter Eric Stults was okay in his seven innings of work. While the 6ER runs were troublesome, it was nice to see him pitch deeper in the ball game to give the young Braves bullpen always appreciated rest.
Andrelton Simmons reached base every plate appearance tonight, including two clutch RBI hits late in the game. Cameron Maybin crushed Jason Marquis’ offering to left center in the bottom of the fifth. Maybin also had a nice single to the right side of the diamond. If he can hit for average with the power surge he is on, Maybin might win the starting center field job that he is now sharing with Eric Young, Jr.
Sadly, AJ Pierzynski’s 13-game hitting streak comes to an end tonight. He still hit the ball hard as he was absolutely robbed by Marlon Byrd in the fourth and again by Bruce in the sixth. I can’t emphasize how incredible that play Marlon Byrd made on AJ’s certain bloop single really was. Marlon Byrd is still a very talented player after all these years. It’s a shame that he has never really had a home at the Major League level.
This wasn’t a bad game for the Braves. The Reds just looked like they were playing at home in slugger’s paradise Great American Ball Park. Cincinnati looks like a feast or famine type of roster this year, similar to last year’s Braves team. Tonight no one went hungry in the Cincy dugout as runs were bountiful.
Tomorrow has the makings of an excellent pitcher’s duel as a pair of aces square off. All-Stars Julio Teheran and Johnny Cueto take the hill for tomorrow’s 1:35 PM ET start.
