With the 207th pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select ILB Amarlo Herrera from the University of Georgia. Like his battering mate new Kansas City Chief Ramik Wilson, Amarlo Herrera never left the field when playing for the Georgia Bulldogs in the last two seasons.
Amarlo is a tackling machine from the inside linebacker position. He plays with great instinct and high football intelligence. Herrera rarely makes a boneheaded play in the front seven. The Colts are certainly getting a great value pick with their sixth round selection in Herrera.
While he may be undersized and plays a more reactive style of linebacker, I loved him when he played Between the Hedges for the Dawgs. Herrera doesn’t project to start at the professional level but I would find it hard to believe that he can’t find some way to contribute to the Colts defense.
Like Wilson, Amarlo Herrera will be learning his third defense in as many seasons when he suits up for Chuck Pagano and the Indianapolis Colts this fall. This fiery competitor has great student mentality and if he feels slighted for being drafted this late, he could push for playing time if the Colts linebackers give into complacency.

When analyzing Amarlo Herrera’s game, the physical traits aren’t going to blow you away. But if you can uncover the sound football mind of his, you now have a new intelligent linebacker to work into your rotation, Indianapolis. What I liked the most about him in Athens was his reliability and team-first mentality. Those are crucial elements to becoming a successful linebacker.
I’m anxious to see how Amarlo Herrera’s game translates to the NFL level. While there are no guarantees that he will accumulate as many tackles for the Colts that he had for the Dawgs, I know that Herrera will out work guys that don’t take him seriously.
Congratulations on getting drafted by the Indianapolis Colts, Amarlo!
