Teheran, Braves Split Cincy Series With 5-0 Shutout
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves defeat the Cincinnati Reds in a 5-0 shutout Sunday afternoon to split the weekend series. Julio Teheran was terrific in six innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out six batters. Teheran has had a rough last couple of starts and besting the Reds ace Johnny Cueto will go a long way to getting Julio back on the right track.

Kelly Johnson continues to hit with power for the Braves with a two-run blast in the bottom of the first. Jonny Gomes hit a line drive homer off Cueto in the bottom of the third. Freddie Freeman continues to swing a hot ball with two more hits this afternoon. Christian Bethancourt had two hits in his start at catcher this afternoon.
Cody Martin pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Teheran, striking out three and walking no one in the seventh and eighth innings. Michael Kohn came into to finish off the Reds in the ninth but after issuing a walk to Brandon Phillips, Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez decided to go with his favorite lefty Luis Avilan. Avilan was able to get Brennan Boesch to chase a breaking ball out of the zone to record the final out of the game. Three solid innings out of a tired and struggling bullpen should build some confidence when the Philadelphia Phillies come to town tomorrow for a three game set.
In the series split with Cincinnati, the Reds outscored the Braves 16-14 over the four games. Defensively Atlanta looked so much better in the field than they have in recent weeks. Hopefully the Braves can carry this win into their series with the lowly Phillies.
Tomorrow’s starters are Alex Wood for the Braves and former Brave Aaron Harang for the Phillies. This will be a pitching rematch from April 24th when the Phillies won on a walkoff error by Freddie Freeman to win 1-0. First pitch tomorrow is at 7:10 PM ET.
