UGA’s Andrews Signs with Pats, Mason to Tryout for Phins

According to Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia Bulldogs center David Andrews signed with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent and UGA QB Hutson Mason has a scheduled tryout for the Miami Dolphins.  Neither senior standout for the Dawgs were among the upperclassmen drafted this weekend in Chicago.

It’s surprising that David Andrews did not get selected this weekend.  Though undersized for a center he was in contention for the Rimington Trophy for most of his senior season for the Dawgs.  In three seasons as Georgia’s anchor on the offensive line, he continued UGA’s excellence from the center position following four outstanding years from Ben Jones now of the Houston Texans.

Andrews plays with great poise and intelligence.  His work ethic and leadership skills should give David a chance to make Bill Belichick’s defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots team.

In his lone season as the UGA starting quarterback, Hutson Mason guided the Dawgs to a 10-3 record (6-2 SEC) and a bowl victory over the awful Bobby Petrino and his Louisville Cardinals.  Mason only threw over 200 yards once in his thirteen starts in 2014.  That wasn’t an issue as Hutson is a great game manager that throws few interceptions.  He also had the deepest running back corps in the country to had the ball off to.

I was certain that Mason was not going to get selected in the draft, but I knew that his high intellect and catchable ball would garner interest from some team in the league.  While there is no way that he can compete with the up-and-coming star QB Ryan Tannehill, Mason is great in the classroom and capable of playing in a conservative passing game for Joe Philbin’s Miami Dolphins.

It’s up in the air if either Andrews or Mason can make an NFL roster.  I do know that these are great men of character and will compete with class as they begin their careers as professional football players.  Good luck in Foxboro, David!  Good luck in South Beach, Hutson!  New England and Miami are each getting a DGD.
