Hutson Mason Signs With The Washington Redskins

In his ‘one last shot’, Hutson Mason earned himself an NFL contract after his performance in the Washington Redskins rookie minicamp.  The former UGA starting quarterback went undrafted a few weeks ago despite leading the Dawgs to a 10-3 record and a Top Ten AP Ranking in 2014.  Hutson joins Robert Griffin III, Colt McCoy, and Kirk Cousins in the Redskins’ quarterback room.

I’m thrilled for Hutson as his work ethic has transformed him into an NFL quarterback.  He will get an opportunity to showcase his on-field leadership and throwing accuracy in both training camp and preseason games for the 2015 Redskins.

Washington has struggled mightily from the quarterback position since RGIII’s torn ACL in the 2012 NFC Wild Card Game against the Seattle Seahawks.  I’m not saying that Mason will start for the Redskins in 2015, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Washington HC Jay Gruden keeps Hutson on the ‘Skins practice squad.  Interceptions from the quarterback position have hurt the Redskins these last two seasons.  Perhaps Mason’s greatest skills are his abilities to game manage and not turn the ball over.

It’s going to seem very strange when I see Hutson Mason play in a preseason game for the Redskins.  I’ve just gotten so used to him in wearing the red and black for the Dawgs these last five years.  Washington is getting a hardworking, cerebral passer that plays with great composure.  His positive attitude will definitely help bring stability to a tense locker room.

While he is not the most talented quarterback on the Washington Redskins’ roster, you can count on Hutson to carry himself with class and lead by example on a downtrodden football team.  Teams like Washington can always use high character guys in their organization as the team looks to get back to playing solid football.  The Redskins are getting a DGD.  Congratulations, Hutson.  Well done!
