The Atlanta Braves take three of four in the home series with the Milwaukee Brewers with a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon.  Atlanta moves above .500 for the first time in a month with today’s win.  The bullpen was fantastic in 1.1 innings, but it was all about rookie fireballer Mike Foltynewicz this afternoon.

More from Atlanta Braves

Folty dominated the Brewers lineup in 7.2 innings pitched.  He allowed just one earned and three hits in his best start as an Atlanta Brave.  He walked just one batter and struck out seven today.  Folty was consistently over 94 MPH on the radar gun.  He even had a great single off Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson Sunday afternoon.  Mike Foltynewicz has the potential of a front-line starter for the Braves and today we got to see what he is truly capable of.

The Braves scored their two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson.  Nelson was neck-and-neck with Folty through five but got into a tough situation in the sixth with bases loaded and no outs.  AJ Pierzynski had an RBI fielder’s choice off Elian Herrera’s glove in a diving effort to score Cameron Maybin.  Andrelton Simmons had a more legitimate RBI than AJ, as his sharp single to leftfield plated Freddie Freeman.  Both pitching staffs were excellent in today’s game, but Atlanta was able to capitalize on Nelson in the sixth.  That was all the Braves’ staff needed to get Folty a well deserved victory.

Cameron Maybin and Nick Markakis extend their hitting streaks to nine and five games respectively.  I really them hitting second and fourth for the Braves.  Their approaches at the plate generate consistent at-bats of quality.  Todd Cunningham had another hit today and is hitting .370 on the season.  He played great defense in leftfield as well today.

The Braves end their home stand with a 4-2 record as they embark on a West Coast road trip this week.  Atlanta will play the Los Angeles Dodgers tomorrow night for Memorial Day.  Williams Perez will make his second start for the Braves as he takes on LHP Brett Anderson.  Great series win for the Braves!  Let’s hope for good luck against the Goliath Dodgers.
