What Game Could A Nick Chubb Heisman Moment Occur?
By John Buhler
It happens every so often when a collegiate football player shines in the biggest moment and delivers his team to victory in such an iconic way that it becomes synonymous with his Heisman Trophy winning season.

LSU RB Billy Cannon returned an 89-yard punt over #1 ranked Ole Miss on Halloween night in Tiger Stadium to upset their rival in 1959. Florida QB Steve Spurrier waved off his kicker in favor of himself to kick a game-winning 40-yard field goal to lead his Gators over Auburn in 1966. Boston College QB Doug Flutie completed a “Hail Mary” pass as time expired to beat the Miami Hurricanes in the Orange Bowl. UGA Sophomore RB Nick Chubb is a serious contender for the 2015 Heisman Trophy. What game could a Nick Chubb Heisman moment occur?
After looking at Georgia’s 2015 schedule, I see six games that Nick Chubb could potentially have that signature moment many Heisman voters covet. Those games are Alabama, @ Tennessee, Missouri, GA/FLA, @ Auburn, and @ Georgia Tech. I think these six games are either deep enough into the season and/or against a high-profile opponent, all of which occur in October or later. However, some seem more promising than others.
Alabama might be too early in the season. Although I expect the Crimson Tide giving Georgia all it has to offer when they venture to Sanford Stadium, I think a UGA victory over ‘Bama October 3rd would feel a bit inflated. Yes, beating a Nick Saban Alabama team gives your school instant credibility but what if ‘Bama were to finish the regular season at 10-2 or worse? Nick Chubb would have to single-handedly carry the Dawgs to victory that early in the season if the Tide doesn’t roll in 2015.
Tennessee could find itself ranked by the time the Dawgs make their way to the banks of the Tennessee River. If the Vols are a serious SEC East contender on October 10th and this game is tight like most recent contests in this annual rivalry, Nick Chubb would have to have a Hobnail Boot type play for it to become his signature moment of the 2015 campaign. But if Georgia handles UT easily on the road then I don’t think his potential Heisman moment happens in Knoxville.

Georgia-Florida is high-profile enough to offset a potential down season for the Gators should Chubb run all over Jim McElwain’s team. Missouri will come to Athens during Homecoming and both programs are the front-runners for the Eastern Division title this fall. Chubb first came to national prominence with his play against Mizzou in Columbia last fall replacing the suspended Todd Gurley. If both teams are in the top ten, then maybe it happens Saturday in Athens. Far too many of Georgia’s marquee moments have occurred on the road or on a neutral site.
But I think that if Nick Chubb were to have a Heisman Trophy defining moment in 2015, it would have to come on the road against either Auburn or Georgia Tech. The last time the Dawgs played on the Plains, it was a very awful night for Dawg Nation as The Prayer at Jordan-Hare occurred. Auburn should contend for an SEC Championship in 2015 and if Chubb were to bring the Tigers’ title aspirations to a halt in late November, he could become the next Heisman Trophy winner. A similar situation applies in Atlanta for the Yellow Jackets as Georgia Tech looks to get into the College Football Playoff as a major player in the ACC this fall.
I’m imagining all these crazy scenarios in my head because I miss college football that much. Nick Chubb certainly has all the tools and plenty of opportunities to get Georgia in the CFP picture and its third Heisman Trophy, the first since 1982 when Herschel Walker wore that awesome red sports coat.
