Braves Beat Red Sox 4-2 At Fenway
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves defeat the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on a cold and drizzly Monday night. Atlanta hands the Sox their seventh consecutive loss as Boston grounded into three double plays tonight. The Braves scored thrice in the top of the fourth and that’s all Williams Perez needed to get the victory in his quality start.

In his third win of the season, Perez went six shutout innings, surrendering just five hits and two walks along with his pair of strikeouts. Though he only threw 79 pitches tonight because of his spot save against the Mets Saturday afternoon, it seems that Williams Perez does have staying power in the Atlanta rotation. He lowered his season’s ERA to 2.29. When he doesn’t walk batters, he’s as good as any Braves starter. I’ve been very impressed with Perez this season and look forward to his starts for Atlanta.
The bullpen allowed the two Red Sox’s runs tonight. Dana Eveland gave up a solo shot to the deepest part of Fenway Park to Xander Bogaerts in the seventh. Jason Grilli had one unearned run in his 17th save of the season for the Braves. He hardly ever throws a clean inning for the Braves. Almost always someone gets on when Grilli pitches, but he usually finds a way to limit the damage. Jim Johnson and Nick Masset pitched a scoreless combined 1.2 in relief tonight. They’ve been reliable coming out of the Braves ‘pen lately. Let’s hope I didn’t just jinx them.

Nick Markakis, Juan Uribe and AJ Pierzynski each had two hits tonight for the Braves. Markakis, Pierzynski and Jace Peterson each had an RBI tonight. The team’s ability to play small ball in the fourth inning off Rick Porcello gave the Braves all the runs they needed tonight. Though Cameron Maybin and Andrelton Simmons had off-nights at the plate, Jonny Gomes continues to struggle in the batter’s box for the Braves. He looked at strike three twice tonight and is hitting just .209 for the Braves this season.
Great win for the Braves tonight. Boston will want to break its growing losing streak in tomorrow afternoon’s contest. Atlanta wants to win both games in Boston before heading back to Atlanta to finish off the Sox this week. Tomorrow’s starters are Julio Teheran for the Braves and Wade Miley for the Red Sox. First pitch happens at 4:05 PM ET. Go Braves!
