Holt Hits For Cycle, Sox Top Braves 9-4
By John Buhler
The Boston Red Sox end their seven-game losing streak Tuesday afternoon when they defeated the Atlanta Braves 9-4. The four-game series between the Braves and Red Sox continues in Atlanta tomorrow evening all tied up at a game apiece. 2B Brock Holt was the star of today’s game as he hit for the cycle for the Sox. Holt is the first Boston player to achieve that feat since John Valentin did it back in 1996.

Julio Teheran had a very forgettable start for the Braves this afternoon. He went 6.1 innings, allowing 6 earned runs on 13 hits. It’s not easy pitching in Fenway Park but Teheran’s ERA on the season is above 5.00 (5.07 ERA). Though he has a winning record on the season for the Braves (4-3), Julio has not had a productive year for Atlanta.
Sugar Ray Marimon didn’t help his second cousin out in relief as the young righthander gave up three earned runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. At least Luis Avilan didn’t allow a run in his 0.2 innings pitched.
Juan Uribe led the Braves with three hits this afternoon. His defense at third continues to amaze as Atlanta has the best left side of the infield defensively in all of baseball. In a spot start filling in for Andrelton Simmons, SS Pedro Ciriaco went 2-4 with an RBI.
Ryan Lavarnway made his Braves debut this afternoon. Though he went hitless, he made a great throw down to second to retire Brock Holt on an attempted steal. I like it when our middle infielders don’t have to apply the tag after a bounced throw down to the second base bag.
Boston just had a better day at the plate than the Braves did. Every Red Sox batter had at least one hit this afternoon. Their three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning were enough insurance to give their starter Wade Miley the victory today. Tomorrow’s probable starters are Alex Wood for the Braves and Joe Kelly for the Red Sox. First pitch happens at 7:10 PM ET. Better luck tomorrow, Atlanta.
