Who Wins The Starting Center Job For UGA?
By John Buhler
While the UGA starting QB competition will headline most of Georgia’s offseason speculations, there is another major battle for a starting job with the Bulldogs. Longtime C David Andrews graduated and is now with the New England Patriots. UGA has had tremendous stability at center these last seven seasons with only Andrews and Houston’s Ben Jones as the starters. Who will rise to the occasion this summer and claim the starting center job for the Bulldogs this fall?

This spring HC Mark Richt said that three offensive linemen would compete for the starting center job: Junior Brandon Kublanow, Senior Hunter Long, and Sophomore Isaiah Wynn. After spring practice, Richt has still not named a starting center for the Dawgs. But I think if you can read the tea leaves, it isn’t as difficult to discern as the highly discussed QB battle.
Kublanow is one of four returning starters on the offensive line (OT John Theus, OT Kolton Houston, and OG Greg Pyke). Last season, Brandon Kublanow started at guard for the Dawgs. Though he was the number two overall center prospect coming out of Walton High School (Go Raiders!) in 2013, for continuity sake he might just stay at guard for UGA in 2015.
Wynn should start for Georgia by his Junior season as a highly anticipated recruit in 2014. I see him as a great rotational lineman for the Dawgs with his ability to play all three interior lineman positions well. He’ll bring a similar value to what reserve OT Watts Dantzler provided for UGA the last few seasons. Isaiah could definitely fit right in as the new starting Georgia C, but probably holds better value in 2015 as a spot starter on the offensive line should any injuries occur. Let’s hope that they don’t but Wynn contributes nicely as the sixth man of the offensive line for Coach Rob Sale.

So Hunter Long makes the most since at center for the Dawgs now. He has the veteran leadership of an upperclassman and could easily bridge the gap to his replacement in 2016. Though he doesn’t come across as versatile as either Kublanow or Wynn, Long gives off a similar vibe that I got from Andrews and Jones when they were in Athens. Plus he was present at the media conference with Coach Richt and Nick Chubb when our star running back compared himself to a Lamborghini.
One of Georgia’s strengths in 2015 will once again be its offensive line. That bodes well for a team that loves to run the football. If Coach Sale’s players run block anything like they did last year for Will Friend (now the OC at Colorado State), Georgia could have a very special season on the offensive side of the football.
