Ciriaco Leads Braves Over Red Sox 5-2
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves beat the Boston Red Sox 5-2 Wednesday night at Turner Field. Atlanta has taken two of the first three games with the Sox in this split series. The Braves can get a third win over Boston tomorrow. SS Pedro Ciriaco filled in nicely for Andrelton Simmons, who’s wrist is still bothering him after getting hit by a pitch Monday night. Pedro went 3-4 with 2 RBI’s in his start at shortstop for Atlanta.

Alex Wood battled tonight in the Georgia heat. He went six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits, with seven strikeouts and two walks in a no decision. Wood only made one bad pitch tonight that Mike Napoli clobbered into the left-center bleachers for a sixth inning solo blast. Overall, it was a good outing for Alex Wood in his quality start.
It was the bottom of the seventh inning that gave the Braves the lead. Nick Markakis had a single to left to score Cameron Maybin. AJ Pierzynski forced a walk out of Red Sox reliever Tommy Layne to score Markakis. Daniel Castro also got his first big league hit in his first career at bat: a sharp single to the right side in the seventh. Maybin provided an extra insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single that scored Jonny Gomes who might have pulled something in his leg sprinting home.

The bullpen was great tonight for the Braves. Nick Masset, Jim Johnson, and Jason Grilli pitched a combined three scoreless innings. Masset has been very reliable for the Braves, allowing no runs in his last six appearance for Atlanta. Johnson recorded his 16th hold of the season and Grilli earned his 18th save. All three Braves’ relievers have an ERA of 3.00 or lower.
This was a great win for the Braves battling through the hottest day of the year so far. The only downside to tonight’s game was that Freddie Freeman didn’t finish the game due to a right wrist strain. According to Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez, Freeman has dealt with this nagging injury since the Mets series and that it’s day-to-day much like with Simmons’ wrist injury. Atlanta looks to take 3 of 4 from the Sox tomorrow as Shelby Miller takes the mound in the series finale with our Interleague Rivals.
