Buchholz, Red Sox Defeat Braves 5-2
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves split their four-game series with the Boston Red Sox Thursday night with a 5-2 defeat. Boston just happened to have the best player on the diamond tonight, as RHP Clay Buchholz pitched a marvelous ball game for the Sox. He went 7 innings, allowing 2 unearned runs, and striking out 3 in his start.

Shelby Miller continues to never get run support. He ran out of gas in the sixth inning as his pitch count crept up towards 100. Miller allowed 3 of his 4 earned runs in the top of the sixth. Shelby went 5.2 innings before being pulled by Fredi Gonzalez.

Somehow, Miller’s ERA in the season remains just below 2.00 at 1.99. And he still hasn’t won a game for the Braves since nearly no-hitting the Marlins over a month ago. His ERA could get him to the All-Star game but he should definitely have more than 5 wins on the season.
Atlanta only strung together six hits to go along with their two unearned runs tonight. Cameron Maybin lead the way for the Braves with two hits his average is at a cool .300. Who thought Maybin would be hitting .300 for Atlanta when he came over from San Diego in the Craig Kimbrel Trade?

Though Nick Markakis’ batting average dips below .300 (.299) for the first time in a while, he did set an MLB record for consecutive errorless games in the outfield. Nick surpassed Darren Lewis with his clean game from rightfield tonight. Markakis has not committed an error defensively in 393 straight ball games. Way to go, Nick!
Overall this was another weird game for the Braves. There were a lot of high choppers and miscues in the infield for both teams. Juan Uribe completely missed an easy pop up a third of the way up the third base line. Brock Holt seemed to score every time I looked up at the TV screen. But like I said, Clay Buchholz was the best player in tonight’s game. He just happens to play for the other team.
The Braves take on the Mets this weekend. According to Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez, Matt Wisler will make the start for the Braves tomorrow versus reigning NL Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom. More on Matt Wisler in the morning.
