Teheran, Braves Shutout Mets 1-0 In Series Sweep
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves defeat the New York Mets 1-0 on Father’s Day to give Atlanta a series sweep over their arch rival. Julio Teheran and Matt Harvey competed in a great pitchers’ duel this evening. The lone run of the ball game came in the bottom of the seventh when Pedro Ciriaco had a pinch-hit RBI single to center to score C Ryan Lavarnway from second base.

Julio Teheran had his best start of the season today, going 7 shutout innings. Teheran effectively used his slider today as the Mets only managed one hit off the Colombian righthander. Julio had a very efficient pitching day, throwing 50 of his 78 pitches for strikes. His strikeout to walk ratio this evening was a solid 5:2.

The bullpen pitched well in the eighth and ninth innings. Nick Masset and Dana Eveland combined to throw a scoreless eighth. Though Jim Johnson allowed two hits in the ninth, he was able to record his 4th save of the season.
I’ve been very impressed with Nick Masset since the Braves’ dreadful West Coast road trip. He has not allowed a run or walked a batter in any of his last 7 appearances for the Braves over 5.1 innings. I like how the ball comes out of his hand. His consistent arm slot has given Masset great command of both his fastball and breaking ball. He seems to have really solidified himself as a sound middle relief option for the Braves.
Like I said before, I was a classic pitchers’ duel. Both teams combined for one run on ten hits. Though the Braves out hit the Mets six to four, no Braves batter had more than one base hit. The two most important hits definitely came in the bottom of the seventh inning for Atlanta.

Ryan Lavarnway missed a solo shot to left-centerfield by maybe a foot on his powerful double. Pedro Ciriaco continues to deliver when he gets on the field. His two-out RBI single off Matt Harvey was the difference in this evening’s ball game. Mets Manager ended up taking Harvey out of the game after Ciriaco’s go-ahead base hit. Ciriaco is a testament to how improved the Braves’ bench is in 2015 over what Fredi Gonzalez had to work with in 2014.
Atlanta gets back to .500 today with their series sweep over the New York Mets. The Braves are just two games back of first place Washington. Atlanta can gain ground on the Nats and possibly take control of the National League East. Now that Julio Teheran seems like he is back on track and the bullpen isn’t disastrous any more, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Braves in first place with another series victory over Washington this week.
