Atlanta Braves’ Skid Continues, Fall 8-4 to Pirates
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves dropped their fifth game in a row Saturday afternoon falling 8-4 to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Atlanta is 0-5 in this current road trip. The Braves need to win tomorrow afternoon to avoid back to back sweeps at the hands of the Washington Nationals and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Weather was absolutely an issue in today’s game at PNC Park. Today’s start got delayed by 20 minutes as scattered showers ran rampant in Western Pennsylvania this afternoon. Perhaps that contributed to Julio Teheran’s disappointing first inning.

After plunking CF Andrew McCutchen in the bottom of the first, Julio could not keep it together in the first frame. I’d be pretty rattled too if my fastball caused the other team’s best player to exit the game in the first inning. Julio surrendered five runs in the first. Again 1B Pedro Alvarez delivered a solid two-RBI double to initially break the game open.
Julio did settle down in the next five innings he pitched. Teheran allowed just one earned run in the second through sixth innings despite having to deal with another weather delay in the top of the fifth, this one 31 minutes in length. It’s interesting how Julio has become a Jekyll and Hyde pitcher this season for the Braves: good at home, bad on the road. Let’s hope Teheran’s next start occurs at the Ted.
The Atlanta Braves hit decently at the plate today: 4 runs on 11 hits. Jace Peterson had two hits today including a bases-clearing 3-RBI double in the top of the seventh inning. It was actually a ball game heading into the bottom of the frame with the Pirates leading 6-4, until Nick Masset came in and struggled.
Masset who has pitched well for the Braves of late had a rough seventh inning, allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits. Though Sugar Ray Marimon came in a pitched a scoreless eighth, there was no way that the Atlanta Braves offense was going to overcome an 8-4 deficit in the top of the ninth today.
The offense has been meager at best in Freddie Freeman’s absence. Though Peterson, Nick Markakis, and AJ Pierzynski each had two hits this afternoon, the Atlanta Braves aren’t driving enough runners in to give their team a chance on this road trip.

Today’s 4 was the most Atlanta scored in any game on this five-game losing streak. It didn’t help that the Braves didn’t walk even once today. If you’re going to play small ball, you have to make the most of your offensive opportunities and can’t leave runners on base.
Let’s hope that tomorrow’s starter Alex Wood can end the skid with a terrific pitching performance so that the Atlanta Braves can head home on a positive note after a dreadful road trip.
