The Atlanta Braves end their five-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates Sunday afternoon.  Atlanta can head home on a positive note with today’s win after an otherwise lousy six-game road trip.

Alex Wood had an outstanding start today, going 7.1 innings of shutout baseball tying a season high with 8 strikeouts and surrendering just 5 hits.  He had great fastball command today in his efficient start, throwing 94 pitches of which 64 went for strikes.

  • Woody gets back to .500 with his 5th victory on the year and lowers his season ERA to 3.17.  This is the type of start I love seeing out of Alex Wood, pitching to minimal contact while not walking any batters.  Alex kept the ball down in the zone and the Pirates weren’t able to put good wood on the baseball this afternoon.

Atlanta had 8 hits today at the plate including two from 1B Chris Johnson.  The two clutch hits for the Atlanta Braves this afternoon were the two-out RBI single by Nick Markakis to score Cameron Maybin in the top of the fifth and a solo shot to centerfield off the bat of Jace Peterson in the top of the seventh.  With Peterson’s 3rd home run of the year, he now is third on the Braves team in RBI’s on the season with 35.  He continues to impress both on the field and at the plate as the Atlanta Braves’ every day second baseman.

The bullpen came in and did its job in 1.2 innings of relief for Alex Wood.  Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn his 18th hold of the season and lower his ERA to 2.43.  I’m very confident in Johnson as Atlanta’s setup man thus far this season.  Jason Grilli recorded his 21st save of the season despite giving up a two-out RBI double to center off SS Jordy Mercer’s hot bat.

Mercer’s double came about on a warning track collision between LF Eury Perez and CF Cameron Maybin.  I guess Maybin didn’t hear Perez call him off as Cameron knocked Perez off his feet and ultimately out of the ball game with that collision.  Perez was obviously rattled and Joey Terdoslavich had to come in and play the final out in leftfield.  Let’s hope that Eury doesn’t have to join Freddie Freeman or Williams Perez on the 15 Disabled List.

This was a great effort game for the Atlanta Braves.  You could see the team make a conscious effort to lay down bunts to move runners this afternoon.  Runs were hard to come by today for both teams and Atlanta did just enough at the plate to end their five-game losing streak before tomorrow’s off day.  Atlanta needs to carry today’s momentum into their home series with the first-place Washington Nationals starting Tuesday.  Great team win.  Go Braves!
