Atlanta Braves Fall to Nationals Again, 6-1

The Atlanta Braves misery continued Tuesday evening as they once again lost to division rival Washington Nationals, with the final score of 6-1 in favor of the Nats. The Braves avoided being shutout by the Nationals thanks to a 9th inning home-run by third baseman Juan Uribe. The Nationals have won 9 of the last 10 games against the Braves this season.

The Atlanta Braves were happy to finally return home after a disappointing road trip in which they were swept by the Nats in DC, and only took one game against the Pirates at PNC Park this past weekend. The Braves began the night 6 games behind the Nationals for first place in the National League East.

  • Atlanta Braves’ ace Shelby Miller toed the rubber for the club Tuesday night, but the optimism of fans was for naught as the Braves were unable to scrape together any semblance of an offense. Miller struggled in tonight’s game, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 10 Nationals. A costly error by AJ Pierzynski in the 3rd inning allowed a 5th (unearned) run to score.

Once again the Atlanta Braves offense struggled, unable to capitalize with runners on base — though Jordan Zimmerman certainly made it difficult for them. Zimmerman pitched 7.2 innings of shutout ball while allowing no walks and striking out 6 Braves.

Atlanta Braves 3B Juan Uribe hit another home run off Nationals’ relief pitcher David Carpenter, a former Brave who infamously gave up an 8th inning two-run homer in Game 4 of the 2013 NLDS to Uribe to send the Dodgers to the NLCS.

With every passing game, the Atlanta Braves miss their All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman and the offensive contribution he provides. Without their best hitter, the Braves have been unable to manufacture any runs.

The only silver lining that Atlanta Braves fans can glean from tonight’s match was the excellent work of rookie relief pitcher Jake Brigham. The Braves promoted Brigham from AAA Gwinnett this past Saturday after the injury to Williams Perez.

Jake Brigham pitched 3 shutout innings, allowing only 1 hit, 1 walk, while striking out 4. Brigham’s addition to the Atlanta Braves bullpen will be a welcomed one if he can sustain the excellent command he displayed tonight.

The Atlanta Braves will look to even up this three game series against the Nationals tomorrow in Game 2 tomorrow night at Turner Field, with first pitch set for 7:10 PM.
