Atlanta Falcons: Top 5 Players Heading Into 2015
By John Buhler
Perhaps the greatest silver lining to the lackluster Atlanta Falcons defense the last two seasons was the impressive play of cornerback Desmond Trufant. Scouts and coaches across the league praise Tru’s cover skills, student mentality, and playmaking ability as an up-and-coming shutdown corner in this league.

Both of Trufant’s brothers Marcus and Isaiah played defensive back in the NFL. So Desmond comes from one of the NFL’s great families. Desmond was Atlanta’s first round draft pick back in 2013 out of the University of Washington. Trufant started all 16 games in both his rookie and second seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. After Year Two, Desmond Trufant is making the case as one of the league’s premier man-cover corners in the NFL.
He’s certainly discussed with the likes of Seattle’s Richard Sherman, New York Jet’s Darrelle Revis, Cleveland’s Joe Haden, and Arizona’s Patrick Peterson. I envision that Desmond Trufant makes it to his first Pro Bowl in 2015. He should benefit greatly from playing in a defense that can actually get after the opposing quarterback. Trufant should double his career total in interceptions this fall with 5 picks in Raheem Morris’ secondary.
While Atlanta’s pass rush should improve from one of the worst in the NFL in 2015 and the linebacker corps is still suspect at best, I believe that the Falcons’ ability to ballhawk in the secondary will go a long way in getting this underwhelming defense back to at least the middle of the pack this season. Look for Trufant to continue to shine as the Atlanta Falcons’ best defensive player.
